Rapidly bringing a mobile app using Generative AI

Leveraging GitHub Copilot to rapidly create a fully functional demo of a new contractor mobile app, resulting in a $3.2M engagement.

Background

This commercial roofing manufacturer was lagging behind as its competitors disrupted the industry with their focus on digital experience. To catch up, the client issued an RFP for three new tools: a new web application for bids and quotes, a new mobile app for contractors on the go, and a redesigned inspection application. This client was also particularly interested in how they could leverage AI to accelerate delivery and improve the user’s experience.

I was brought in to represent the UX team in the design of our proposed solution, effort estimation, and project planning. To differentiate our company and bring our ideas to life, I leverage GitHub Copilot to create a fully functional demo which we showcased in our Orals presentation.

Deliverables

Functional prototype, high fidelity designs, four hour orals presentation, RFP response

Approach

We only had a few weeks to put together our response, then prepare for our Orals presentation. Thankfully, the client was very transparent, sharing Voice of Customer (VoC) feedback, demos of their existing tools, and a journey map for their primary persona, the Contractor.

This enabled us to take our estimate and prototypes to the next level of fidelity and base our vision for the future off of real customer input. For our demo, we opted to focus on the new contractor app, as this is the area for greatest opportunity in improving the contractor’s experience.

Understand

Dive deep into the shared materials and feedback to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement.

Ideate and validate

Develop low fidelity wireflows, illustrating screen by screen how users would flow through the new contractor app. Highlight blue sky and moonshot ideas for the future.

Build it

Using the wireflows, Material UI, and GitHub Copilot, rapidly create a fully functional prototype of the contractor app, illustrating

Understand

This client had already done a lot of prep work to move the needle forward for their customers. They conducted a thorough Voice of Customer (VoC) survey and shared the results with their RFP package. We also had access to recorded demos of their existing tools, as well as a complete journey map for their primary customer, contractors.

With this information in hand, I was able to create a rough current state service blueprint to assist with our response writing. I also performed a brief competitive analysis of other contractor apps in the industry, highlighting their strengths and opportunities for the client to differentiate themselves

Ideate and validate

Given the time constraints we had for this demo, another designer and I had to rapidly ideate and validate our thoughts with the client. We started with very rough wireframes, which we then translated into wireflows, illustrating screen by screen the steps the user would go through in the new mobile app.

We then leveraged a technical Q&A session the client had offered to get their initial thoughts on the flow and incorporate their feedback.

Build it

Using the flows as the base, I dove into GitHub Copilot to bring the app to life. This was my first experience creating a full application using generative AI, and it was a great learning opportunity.

By the time I had finished the demo, I had over 15 fully functional pages and the ability to toggle the app into English, Spanish, French.

Conclusion

The client loved our response and our company was selected for Orals. I facilitated our four-hour long presentation, using the opportunity to do a brief design thinking exercise with the client, as well as a deep dive into the demo I created.

The demo was a hit and garnered a lot of engagement in the room. Additionally, the CIO said: "you bring a really different approach and energy than everyone else!" At the end of the day, our company was selected and kicked off the $3.2M engagement in October 2025.

FROM THE CLIENT

“You all answered the RFP as expected and perfectly. We are totally clear on how you will be building the solution to our requirements!"

"You bring a really different approach and energy than everyone else!"
